Demirel sees red card appeal rejected (24/6/2008 9:33:25 πμ)

Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel will be forced to sit out of Turkey's Euro 2008 semi-final with Germany, after having his appeal against a two-game ban rejected.

Demirel was given the ban after being sent-off in the dying moments of Turkey's 3-2 win over the Czech Republic for pushing over Jan Koller.

And Turkey were hopeful that the punishment for that sending off would be reduced to just a one game ban, which he has already served during Turkey's penalty shoot-out quarter-final win over Croatia.

But last night Uefa confirmed that Demirel would still serve the initial two game ban which means that Rustu Recbar will continue between the sticks for the semi-final as he did against Croatia.

And Rustu will be hoping for a more assured performance after his misjudgement against Croatia allowed Ivan Klasnic to head Luka Modric's cross into an empty net with around 30 seconds to go.

Thankfully for him he did make up for it seconds later when Semih Senturk pounced on Rustu's free-kick to find a dramatic late equaliser.
