Davydenko looking to improve on shocking Wimbledon record (24/6/2008 9:34:49 πμ)

Nikolay Davydenko is hoping to improve his shocking grass court record when he takes on Benjamin Becker in the first round at Wimbledon today.

The number four seed is playing in his seventh consecutive Wimbledon and in his last six efforts he has suffered a first round elimination four times.

And although he made it to the last 16 at Wimbledon last year that was the last time Davydenko played a competitive match on the surface.

However, he has a fair chance of repeating his performance of last year today as Becker's form in Grand Slam's overall is just as shabby.

Becker has lost in the first round of his last six Grand Slam's with his run at the 2006 US Open when he reached the quarter-finals, the last time he got past the first round of a Grand Slam.

To Becker's advantage he has played in two grass court preparation tournaments ahead of Wimbledon, losing in the second round to James Blake and the first to Arnaud Clement.

So, the game pits together two players who are both equally unimpressed by playing on grass although Davydenko's general better play should see him through.

Davydenko is 1.18 to reach round two with Becker rated as a 3.70 chance.
